- Growing reshoring trend: imports to Europe from China drop -3%;
- In order to support the revitalization of Italian manufacturing, MIMIT deploys strategic tools such as the Transition 5.0 Plan, which is already operational, to which is added the announced Italy for Fashion Plan: both designed to stimulate innovation, competitiveness and encourage reshoring in the sector;
- From May 27 to 29, Milan will host SAMAB – Fashion Technologies Event: the international event dedicated to innovation for apparel manufacturing, designed to foster meetings between companies, professionals and suppliers and boost new synergies.
The current redefinition of production geographies is gradually shifting fashion manufacturing activities back toward Europe and Italy. In this sector, according to Mckinsey’s The State of Fashion 2025 report, between 2019 and 2023, imports from China declined by -6 percent in the United States and -3 percent in Europe, with further contraction expected by 2030. However, the growth of reshoring, the phenomenon through which companies bring back previously relocated production activities, is calling fashion manufacturing industries to rethink their strategies to keep competitiveness and efficiency. In this respect, a crucial role is played by technological innovation, which is essential to support quality, speed and resilience in production processes.
And it is precisely in order to offer Italian companies a strategic meeting point to confront each other, discover cutting-edge technologies, create synergies and strengthen their competitiveness, that from May 27-29, 2025, Milan will host SAMAB – Fashion Technologies Event, the international event dedicated to technological innovation for the fashion manufacturing sector. An event organized by Senaf, in collaboration with Tecniche Nuove Group and under the sponsorship of ANTIA, Confindustria Moda – Federazione Tessile e Moda and IACDE. The event comes at a time of great opportunity for manufacturing companies to take advantage of incentives under the Transition 5.0 Plan, approved last year by MIMIT. These are already operational measures from which many companies – including those in the fashion sector – are actively benefiting or will benefit to innovate their processes, introduce advanced digital technologies and improve energy efficiency. The Plan represents a tangible lever to accelerate the transition to more sustainable and competitive production models, supporting strategic investments capable of strengthening the Italian industrial system and making it more ready to face future challenges.
“In a context characterized by great fragility of international balances and at a time when the twin (green and digital) transitions pose new and important challenges to our production systems, innovation becomes the ‘central element of industrial policy” – comments Raffaele Spallone, Head of Division II – Policies for the digitization of enterprises, innovation and analysis of productive sectors of the Ministry of
Business and Made in Italy- “The public effort in this area is essential to ensure a steady and long-lasting
growth. Transition 5.0 can affect the competitiveness of our SMEs, even and especially in the traditional Made in Italy sectors, where Italy has a competitive advantage that is the result of knowledge and skills built up over time”
MIMIT recently announced a 250 million euro investment deal under the new Italy Plan for Fashion to complete the range of funds introduced to support the sector. It is an initiative designed to strengthen the supply chain, support innovation and promote the competitiveness of the industry, which is also expected to help foster reshoring processes and new production dynamics in the country in the medium term.
SAMAB represents a unique opportunity for industry professionals: it will be a place to identify solutions to improve the efficiency of their processes, discover new design and automation tools, and build relationships with strategic industry partners. The event is designed to foster dialogue between production, innovation and development, with the aim of making a real contribution to the growth of the Italian fashion system. Many visitors are already accredited, including more than 12 percent from 25 foreign countries and Italians representing some of the most renowned fashion brands such as Balenciaga, Boggi, Bottega Veneta, Canali, Christian Dior, Attilio Cornali, Corneliani, Cotonella, Della Rovere, Diadora, Diesel, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Hermes, Hugo Boss, Max Mara, Miroglio, Moncler, Piquadro, Pollini and Valentino, who will attend the event to identify new technological, innovation and networking stimuli in order to improve productivity. With more than 60 exhibiting companies, dedicated demo areas, thematic workshops and B2B meetings, SAMAB represents a unique platform in the European scenario. It will be an unavoidable opportunity for all players in fashion manufacturing who want to seize the signs of change and translate them into lasting competitive advantage.
“Innovating today means ensuring competitiveness tomorrow,” says Emilio Bianchi, Director General of
Senaf and SAMAB. – “The return of manufacturing to Italy can be a real advantage only if companies are able to upgrade their processes and equip themselves with technologies that enable them to produce more quickly, sustainably and efficiently. SAMAB was created to assist this change: an event that is not only exhibition, but strategic for the transformation of the industry”
